Rene Russo was born in Burbank California. She was the daughter of Shirley (Balocca) Barmaid as well as factory worker and Nino Russo. The father of Rene, who was a mechanic and sculptor, left the family at the age of two. She was raised by her mother Rene and her sister Toni by herself. Her mother and father were both of Italian, German, English and Irish descent. Rene suffered from scoliosis during junior high and was forced to wear a torso-length brace. Some of her classmates called her Jolly Green Giant because she was tall. The brace she wore was removed when she entered Burroughs High School, and even though her classmates Ron Howard joined her there too, she was an outcast. Rene had to drop out of school when she was in her tenth year. Since money was tight she started taking several part-time positions during the course of two years, many with advantages of being free. The hostess was at a film theater, which let her go to films at no cost. Also she served meals at restaurants and had free Disneyland admission. It was common for her to work three jobs in one day. Her solely paid job was in an optical facility in charge to inspect the lenses of customers.
